Polite Paws Dog Training

So your family is ready to get a dog but you have no idea about breeds or if an adult dog or puppy is most suitable for your situation. Your only experience with breeds is your neighbour or friends dog that you like, or you fell in love with the puppy at the petshop yesterday. If you buy a dog that is not suited in energy levels, trainability and sociability to your family, you will end up spending $$$ and years trying to change that dog into what you want which can have limited success.

With so many different dogs of different ages and breeds, why not get some assistance to find the perfect dog for your family to avoid this extra work? Often people have misconceptions about a breed because they met one that was awesome or they met one that was aggressive or barky or hyperactive. And let me tell you often people get a rude surprise when they buy a labrador because they think they are calm as they are guide dogs, a small breed dog because it will be easier to keep in their apartment, a staffy because it will be a confident guard dog who can be left in the yard or the latest designer poodle cross because it won’t shed.

Most training and behavioural problems are best addressed in the home to begin with, where the dog spends most of it’s time and is most comfortable. You need to start here first before trying to take them into a new environment, so you can build skills and set-up the dog to succeed. And when you introduce a stranger into your home that effects behaviour also, so live video consults are perfect for dogs worried by strangers. Also as opposed to group classes where we are following a lesson plan, private sessions are tailed to suit your dog and your family. This sort of customised training is critical when working with behavioural issues like aggression and anxiety as one size doesn't fit all. Also sometimes there are reasons that people can't attend group classes at set days/times, so training in your home on your schedule is a more practical or convenient option.

Examples of issues that could be addressed:

- Getting started with a new puppy

- Pulling on lead during walks

- Barking due to excitement and attention seeking

- Impolite Greetings

- Not coming when called

- Digging and destruction

- Separation Anxiety

- Welcoming a Baby to the Family

- Dog/People Aggression

- Reactivity to people or dogs when on lead

- Resource Guarding

- Conflict in Multi-dog or Mixed-animal households

If you are adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group, chances are the dog has not had a full behaviour assessment to ensure that it is safe. And even to simply ensure that it is a suitable match for your family and other pets. If you adopt a dog that is not suited in energy levels, trainability and sociability to your family, you will end up spending $$$ trying to change that dog into what you want which will have limited success. With so many different dog in shelters and rescues around NSW, why not get the perfect dog for your family to avoid this?

If you are part of a rescue group, this assessment will allow you to correctly match the dog to potential adopters to avoid returns and give you piece of mind with dogs you are unsure about.

Features:

- 1 hour behaviour assessment per dog

(at the shelter, rescue or foster home)

- Written report sent to you following the assessment

- I will contact the rescue or shelter to oranganise approval to do the assesment

- Option to email your trainer as much as you need in the week following the adoption with further questions that may come up

- 10% off a puppy class, adult dog class or a private sesison package so you can get started on training your new addition

We differ from most obedience classes as we focus on teaching your dog to be a calm, focused, attentive and well mannered companion. No-one wants to stand in a row with 20 other owners trying to force your dogs to sit, drop, come & stay, while they bark and pull on their leads for an hour, too stressed to even learn anything. Then they drag you home, barg through the front door to jump on everyone, and eat your lunch off the kitchen bench while you take your shoes off. Then steal your shoes! This is what we work on instead!

Everyone who attends our classes comments on just how advanced the content is compared to previous training they have attended, but so simple that even the youngest members of the family can learn!

Our 7 week course will help you to teach them the manners you want them to learn, to take over from all the fun feral things they have taught themselves. We focus on creating a calm environment perfect for learning, so we can teach your dog how to make good choices. We aim that things happening around them will prompt all their wonderful new behaviours like magic.

Our consults are for dogs of any age, so don’t think that your older dog should simply have to continue being scared or muzzled for their visits. Because as our dogs get older they inevitably need to go to the Vet more often as things start to break down.
